2023 Fall Sunday School Quarter

Garmer

Teacher: Mr. Tim Shaw  Age: 70's  Room: Garmer Room (Axson, 3rd Floor)
Subject: "1 Samuel"
The nation is left in shambles after the time of the Judges. Where does hope of redemption, retrieval, rebuilding come from? The same place it always does! In the birth of a baby! We will study the rise and fall of Samuel, Saul, and David as we work verse by verse through the book of 1 Samuel together.

Agape

Teacher: Mr. Oliver Simmons  Age: Late 50's to 60's  Room: Whitaker Bldg., 1st Floor
Subject: "The History of English Puritanism: From Its Edwardian Beginnings Up to the Westminster Assembly"
We will study who the Puritans were, and how their story developed over the course of various monarch's reigns. What did the Puritans seek to accomplish and live for? What was the character of their Christianity and how were they impacted by the seismic changes that happened within their lifetimes? We ask these questions for a greater end: to find out how our lives today might be enriched by a deeper appreciation for and learning from these former saints, known otherwise as "the godly."

Emmaus

Teacher: Mr. Bob Ellis  Age: 40's and 50's  Room: Emmaus Room (Admin Bldg., 2nd Floor)
Subject: "Two Books"
For over 500 years, Christian theologians have been telling us there are “two books given to us by God” (His Word and His world). While we’ve read the One with care, we’ve read the other with a frequently dangerous gullibility. This class will address the why and the how God’s two books must be read together.

Berean

Teacher: Mr. Alex Sutherland  Age: 30's and 40's  Room: Whitaker Bldg., 4th Floor
Subject: "The Lord's Prayer"
We all know that prayer is an essential spiritual discipline for us as Christians and yet so often it is an area of our Christian lives in which we are struggling to grow. In this class we will seek to deepen our prayer lives by studying the model and form of prayer given by Jesus. We will think about what prayer is and the spiritual outlook that we ought to bring into prayer. We will also study each of the petitions from the Lord's Prayer so that we will know better what we should be praying for. All of this we will discuss to the end that Christ might greatly enrich our prayer lives both individually, in our families, and corporately as a church.

New Covenant

Teacher: Mr. Bruce Willson  Age: 20's and 30's  Room: Room #31 (Axson Bldg., 3rd Floor)
Subject: "Psalm 103"
Have you ever stared at a very large diamond and marveled at it sparkling and even shimmery in beauty? Well, that is exactly the sensation one gets when staring at Psalm 103 as David glories in the attributes of God in salvation. In fact, God is portrayed as so glorious that you will discover that you too will want to sing with David, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy name!"

Jerusalem

Teacher: Mr. Matthew Burt  Age: 20's  Room: Room #36 (Axson Bldg., 3rd Floor)
Subject: "Introduction to Theology"
What do we believe? Why do we believe? How can we know what to believe? This course we will seek to answer these basic questions and will serve as the foundation of our understanding of all that theology entails. Our goal is to show that theology is not mere academics. It is an eminently practical discipline that allows us to build a consistent and integrated biblical view of all of life. As R. C. Sproul said, “Everyone is a theologian.” Our desire in this course is to become confident biblical theologians.

College

Teacher: Mr. Evan Gear  Age: Undergraduate  Room: #72 (Admin Bldg., 2nd Floor)
Subject: "A Study of the Westminster Larger Catechism, Questions 58-91"
What does it mean to “be saved?” It is a question, like the one asked by those who heard the first Christian sermon at Pentecost. “What must I do to be saved?” Simply stated, we should believe upon Jesus and be baptized but what does that look like? Join us as we make use of our confessional documents to answer these and other questions concerning our experience of Christ’s saving work as our own.
