Psalm 22:27-28 ~ "All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations."
Psalm 22:27-28 is our 2024 Missions
Conference theme verse as it expresses our
great hope and confidence: “All the ends of the
earth shall remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the earth shall worship
before you. For kingship belongs to the Lord
and he rules over the nations.”
Our great hope is that which is promised
to Abraham in Genesis 12:3 “in you all the
families of the earth shall be blessed.” This is
what is picked up here in Psalm 22, and it’s
that which is commanded by Christ in Matt.
28 “Go into all nations baptizing them.” Our
great hope is that the whole world would be
full of worshippers of the One True God:
“the earth full of the knowledge of God as the
waters cover the sea” (Hab. 2:14).
And we have confidence in this hope, because
“the kingship belongs to the Lord” already
(vs. 28). We can send our missionaries, and
our dollars, and go ourselves to spread Christ’s
kingdom with confidence and hope because
Jesus is already ruling and reigning. His
kingdom is “not of this world” ( Jn. 18:36), and
has no apparent military might, or centralized
bureaucracy—and yet he reigns over all
none-the-less (Dan. 7). Our efforts are a
sure investment.
Further, these verses, their hope and their
confidence come in a surprising place: a
psalm expressing the misery of David, his
crying out to God, “My God, my God why
have you forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1).This the
very “Cry of Dereliction” made by Jesus on
the cross! The first 21 verses of Psalm 22 are
crying out for salvation! But by the time the
psalmist comes to vs. 22—the turn is made to
looking to the Lord and the salvation he has
wrought. The psalm moves from despair and
agony and outcry to rejoicing, and testifying,
and mission. This is the rightful flow of the
Christian life. Our desperation, that becomes
our salvation, must also become our mission.
And so we gather for our annual IPC Missions
Conference with hope for “all the families
of the earth” confident because “he rules”
even in the midst of apparently discouraging
circumstances.
